Inner Portraits
|
| Description: |
Published by: Glen Bray, California, 1982 Book Condition: VG- Jacket Condition: No Jacket Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall Square Binding: Soft Cover Notes: As a 6 year old, this Polish-American sculptor/painter/writer was reprimanded by his teacher for whittling a pencil. The headmaster was wise enough to recognize his carving as a near perfect figure and he was featured in the local newspaper as an art prodigy. As a teen, his family moved to Chicago, where he became a member of the Chicago renaissance luminaries along with Ben Hecht, Carl Sandburg and Clarence Darrow. In the 1930's he was declared the "Greatest Living Artist" by the Polish government, and was given his own museum. Szukalski returned to Poland with all his belongings, his work was cut short by the Siege of Warsaw in 1939. He returned to the United States, but most of his life's work was lost, either bombed or stolen during the War. He lived in obscurity, supporting himself by drawing maps for an aerospace company. In 1971 his works were rediscovered by Glenn Bray, who became his patron and who later issued two publications, Troughful of Pearls (Bray/Zwalve, 1980) and this book. 94 pgs., profusely illustrated in B/W, white pictorial wraps are lightly soiled, and lower front corner is creased, internally clean with sound binding. This attractive copy will be a nice copy for any collection. Keywords:
